Santa Fe’s school board has approved an allocation of $100,000 to file a lawsuit against the state over funding for public schools. They say the legislature has not committed enough money to satisfy the requirement that education be sufficiently funded.  The board is looking for other school districts to join the lawsuit.

U.S. Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico has introduced legislation that could lead to overturning that controversial Supreme Court decision that essentially says money equals speech and corporations are actually people.

The legislation calls for a constitutional amendment that would give Congress, not the courts, power over how elections are financed.

Constitutional amendments require approval by two-thirds of both the House and Senate, after which they would have to be approved by state legislatures in at least 38 states

A court hearing has been set for Thursday over the dispute between the Legal Tender restaurant in Lamy and the Lamy Railroad and History Museum. The operators claim the museum doesn't have the authority to evict them. The restaurant closed at the end of May, following demands from the museum's board that they leave.

The Jaroso Fire burning some 20 miles NE of Santa Fe is at 3500 acres in extremely rugged terrain. The area is largely inaccessible to ground crews.  Potential for growth is considered high as there are large swaths of dead and downed trees throughout the region. Meanwhile, good progress has been made at the 24,000 acre Thompson Ridge Fire in the Jemez with containment at 80%. The Tres Lagunas Fire near Pecos is 90% contained.

On Friday's midday report:  As Santa Feans face restrictions on how many days a week they can water their vegetation, the small community of Mora County faces a near disaster because of the drought…On really hot days, more air cooling units ask for more electricity to deliver consumers more cool air.  But PNM has a way of helping solve the peak demand problem, one air conditioner at a time….And Santa Fe says there’s plenty of parking around the new district courthouse.  But not in its own garage…headlines...60 Seconds with Christopher Hagen...

The Jaroso Fire burning some 20 miles northeast of Santa Fe still has no containment. Estimates of its size range from 4-to-8 thousand acres but the intense heat of the blaze has been preventing accurate infra-red mapping. It's burning in very difficult terrain accessible only by helicopter. The area has almost a thousand acres of abundant ground fuels with vast stands of downed trees, felled by a severe wind incident some years ago.
