Oct. 27 First News: Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office Investigates Weekend Double Murder (Listen)

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were found inside a vehicle. Santa Fe County Sheriff's Captain Adam Mendoza says deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle report on a dirt road in the Villa Vista subdivision around 9 a.m. Saturday. Mendoza says authorities discovered the couple inside the car and both had suffered gunshot wounds. Mendoza says the man has been identified as 18-year old Venancio Cisneros. The woman is believed to be Cisneros’ 13-year old girlfriend, whose name is not being released due to her age.

Santa Fe officials are rolling out a plan to help area residents get access to healthy food. The New Mexican reports that a Food Policy Council made up of local and county officials announced Friday an effort to address "food challenges." The government advisory group conducted a three-year study in a region where centuries-old farming traditions still take place but youths deal with obesity and hunger. The council says its main priorities are improving public transportation so low-income residents can easily get to grocery stores or farmers markets, increasing the presence of locally grown food in schools and preserving farmland. The County Commission is expected to vote on adopting the plan Tuesday. The Santa Fe City Council will vote on the plan at a later date.

The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission has been ordered not to meet about its deliberations regarding the future of the Gila River. The New Mexican reports that a Santa Fe state district judge issued a temporary restraining order last week, preventing the commission from holding meetings or taking action related to the river or the Arizona Water Settlements Act until a hearing on Thursday. Norman Gaume, the former head of the commission, has accused the agency in a lawsuit of violating the state Open Meetings Act. Gaume says the commission and a subcommittee conducted policy meetings and met behind closed doors without proper public notice. The commission faces a year-end deadline for deciding whether to accept federal funds to build a diversion and storage system along the Gila.

A lawsuit challenging New Mexico's public school financing is moving ahead after a state district judge rejected a request by the Public Education Department to dismiss the case. A trial is scheduled for November 2015 in the case by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, or MALDEF, on behalf of parents in the Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Gadsden, Las Cruces, Magdalena, Zuni and Espanola school districts. The lawsuit alleges the state inadequately funds schools, violating the constitutional rights of students with disabilities and others at risk of failing academically such as low-income children and Spanish-speaking students. In rejecting the state's request to dismiss the case, District Judge Sarah Singleton agreed with MALDEF's argument that a sufficient education is a fundamental right under the state constitution.

Rio Rancho police say one of their officers has died after a single-vehicle crash. KOB-TV reports that Police Chief Michael Geier says Officer Anthony Haase was on his way to an assault in progress at a home early Sunday morning when his vehicle crashed near Idalia Road and state Road 528. Investigators have not released details about the crash, which is under investigation. Rio Rancho Mayor Greggory Hull called Haase's death "deeply saddening" and asked the community to keep Haase's family in their thoughts and prayers.

A Google executive has broken the sound barrier and set several skydiving records over the southern New Mexico desert after taking a leap from the edge of space. Alan Eustace's supersonic jump over the weekend from a high-altitude, helium-filled balloon is part of a project by Paragon Space Development Corp. and its Stratospheric Explorer team.
