What President Bill Clinton called "welfare reform" has really turned out to be "welfare withdrawal." In ending Aid for Families with Dependent Children, this so-called reform all but stopped income support, substituting in-kind help like Food Stamps and Housing subsidies, and leaving the poorest of America's poor families virtually penniless. Kathryn Edin, the author of the new book $2 a Day told KSFR's Dave Marash on HERE & THERE, in today's post-recession world, these families, including some 3 million children, have been left without any prospects for decent jobs or safe places to live.
