The two most significant factors causing New Mexico's epidemic of alcohol and opiate overdose deaths are unrelenting poverty and doctors who overprescribe narcotic painkillers -- that according to health officials who addressed a conference on drug and alcohol addiction in Santa Fe last weekend.
