March 20 - NM's Proposed Truth in Political Advertising Bill the First of Its Kind

It’s called the “Truth in Political Advertising Act,” introduced in the State Senate by Howie Morales, one of the Democrats’ unsuccessful 2014 candidates for Governor. Morales says his campaign experience and seeing the very low voter turnout in last year’s general election prompted his sponsorship of the measure. Only about 40-percent of New Mexico’s registered voters participated in last November’s election. Morales says the proposal would require the Attorney General’s Office to select three nonpartisan public or private entities to serve as the review agencies to score the advertisements for truthfulness.
