August 3 First News: Federal Ag Officials Tout S. F. Farmers Market As One Of Nation's Best (Listen)

Out of approximately 84-hundred farmers markets across the country, federal agricultural officials along with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture chose the Santa Fe’s Farmers Market as the site to launch National Farmers Market Week. It’s being celebrated through Saturday to spotlight farmers markets for “developing local and regional food systems that support farmers and help grow rural economies.” Anne Alonzo of the USDA spoke at the Santa Fe Farmers Market Saturday to get National Farmers Market Week rolling:

Alonzo says Farmers Markets have become community gathering spaces, something she says is exemplified at Santa Fe’s twice-weekly Market at the Railyard. New Mexico’s Agriculture Secretary Jeff Witte (wit-ee) discussed the numerous benefits of Farmers Markets.

Witte touted New Mexico’s two-for-one buying power for people on the State’s Supplemental Nutrition Assurance Program, or “SNAP,” formerly known as food stamps.

State health officials say a Santa Fe County woman's death was the result of the plague. The New Mexican newspaper reports that a 52-year-old woman died from the disease, making her the first human case of plague in the state this year. There were two human plague cases in New Mexico last year.

A Santa Fe film producer and counselor who describes herself as “adolescent advocate,” is working on an ambitious project. Lindsay Rose is producing a documentary on adolescent drug-  abuse in Santa Fe and Rio Arriba Counties, while seeking additional funding for her effort. Rose says the first part of the film will showcase the epidemic of adolescent drug addiction in America.

Rose says the little library effort has become a worldwide phenomenon, as they build literacy and, she adds, community. She’s being assisted locally through the Teen Alliance Cooperative or TACO, which meets at the Shake Foundation Tuesdays from 11am until 4pm.  Through TACO, Rose says local teens fighting drug and alcohol abuse and addiction will be building and painting the three free Little Libraries. Rose says they will be auctioned off at the La Fonda Hotel in October to benefit the ‘Addict Youth’ film project. To donate or for more information, email Linday-dot-Rose at me-dot-com.
