New Mexico legislators are to receive a new revenue forecast that will help shape the debate over spending in next year's state budget. Top officials in Governor Susana Martinez's administration will outline the revenue projections Monday to the Legislative Finance Committee during a meeting in Las Vegas. The report will estimate how much revenues are expected to grow next year, providing money for spending increases on programs and services. The Legislature meets in January to work on a budget for the 2016 fiscal year, which starts next July. This year's budget calls for the state to spend almost six-point-two billion dollars on public education and general government programs, an increase of nearly five-percent from a year earlier. Economists for the Martinez administration and the Legislature prepare the state's revenue forecast.

A group of scientists who work to limit the spread of nuclear weapons is urging the U.S. Energy Secretary to intervene on behalf of a fired worker at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Santa Fe political scientist James Doyle says he was fired after 17 years on the job in July after writing an article for a nonprofit web site in support of abolishing nuclear weapons. Doyle worked on the lab's non-proliferation team. Federation of American Scientists President Charles Ferguson urged Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz to ensure that that Doyle isn't penalized for participating in the national dialogue over nuclear policy. Doyle tells the New Mexican he was fired after lab officials claimed his article raised classification concerns. He says the article had been cleared for publication.

The school board of New Mexico's largest school district have named its former chief operations officer as interim superintendent amid questions surrounding the former school chief's departure. The Albuquerque Public Schools board announced Friday that Brad Winter, who retired two month ago, will serve as school chief while the district conducts a national search. Winter also is an Albuquerque city councilor. Embattled Superintendent Winston Brooks resigned last week after board members said he was being investigated for a personnel matter. Both sides declined to elaborate. The school board then approved a 350-thousand dollar settlement to buy him out of his contract. Hispano Round Table of New Mexico president Ralph Arellanes says the next superintendent should be Latino since the majority of students in the district are Hispanic.
