August 21 - SFPS Superintendent Joel Boyd Talks Truancy, Academic Support For Parents

Earlier this week, Santa Fe Public Schools superintendent Joel Boyd told us, most people agree with the concept behind teacher evaluations--that is, making sure instructors are equipped to teach students effectively. But when it comes to the evaluation system New Mexico has created to ensure education quality, there's a lot less consensus. From annual ratings derived from student test outcomes in the previous school year--to the question of whether student test scores should be factors in teacher ratings at all, Boyd says teachers in Santa Fe schools aren't ready to accept the system the way it is. But that system, as well as compliance with state-mandated PARCC testing, is mostly out of Joel Boyd's control. One problem he can tackle, as he told KSFR's Zelie Pollon, is the issue of chronic truancy.
