April 24 First News: Former Santa Fe County Democrats' Leader Vying For State Party Post (Listen)

The New Mexico Democratic Party will choose a new party chair during tomorrow’s Central Committee meeting in Albuquerque. Former Santa Fe County Democratic Party chair Richard Ellenberg is one of two candidates seeking the post—former Lieutenant Governor Candidate Deborah Haaland is the other. Ellenberg, who directed Santa Fe Democrats for six years, says the state party hasn’t been working well and hasn’t been contributing to winning elections.  *****042415-Ellenberg-1 :23***** Other needs Ellenberg says the party should address include its communications strategy. Government scientists say more than a dozen regions in the United States have experienced a rise in man-made earthquakes in recent years. A report released Thursday found that 17 areas in eight states have seen small quakes triggered by oil and gas drilling. They include parts of New Mexico as well as Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas. The U.S. Geological Survey says most of the shaking is caused by the oil and gas industry injecting wastewater deep underground, which can activate dormant faults. A few cases stemmed from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The agency plans to study how often man-made quakes are expected to occur in the next year and how much shaking they would produce. Scientists released the report at an earthquake meeting in Pasadena, California.

A group of American Indian actors have walked off the set of an Adam Sandler movie over complaints about stereotypes and offensive names. Actor Loren Anthony told The Associated Press on Thursday that he and eight others quit the production of the satirical Western "The Ridiculous Six" after producers ignored their concerns about its portrayal of Apache culture. Anthony says the script also included offensive names for Native American female characters. He says producers told them to leave if they felt offended. A spokesman for Sandler's New Hampshire-based production company, Happy Madison Productions, didn't immediately return a phone message. "The Ridiculous Six" is produced by Sandler and Allen Covert and is slated for a Netflix-only release. Production on the film began this month in Santa Fe and northern New Mexico.

If you want to safely dispose of unwanted, expired and unused medication and clean out your clutter of pills, tablets and capsules filling your medicine cabinet, you can do so tomorrow, between 10a.m. – 2 p.m.  Bring all your unwanted medication to the five collection sites hosted by law enforcement in Santa Fe County.   Over the last two years more than 1,000 pounds of discarded medication has been collected during these bi-annual events.  The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has coordinated these dates nation-wide.  But now local law enforcement is working together to provide an opportunity to introduce the community to the permanent drop locations and to conveniently collect these medications. In all, five sites will accept drugs Saturday, including the Agora in Eldorado, the Village Market in Rancho Viejo, and the old Walmart on Cerrillos. Additionally there will be two permanent drop-off  locations – the Fire Station on Murales Rd and the Police Department on Camino Entrada .All drugs are collected and then safely destroyed by the New Mexico State Police.
